True enough the M22 did trickle out the door in 1965-67 and was buried in the option lists. It was around 1968 that easy to find the M22 on option lists, but the significant extra cost was a way to dissuade all but the most serious of gearheads. Drain plugs came to the M22 first, as did the fine splines.

IMHO save the close ratio gearsets of the M22 for use ahead of 3.73:1 and larger ratio rear ends, and FWIW I wouldn't go smaller than a 3.36:1 rear gear even with a wide ratio Muncie box. Forget the Muncie OD, unless it's going in your pickup truck. BTW, you can now buy high-quality M22 "rock crusher" style wide ratio gearsets!
